Steve Durst started racing in 1961, competing in a few 1966 Trans-Am
races in a Barracuda then concentrated on SCCA club racing through
the 1967 season. In 1968, he purchased a Vulcan Formula A car which
he campaigned through the 1968 season, placing second in Northeast
Division standings in 1968 and first in 1969. For the 1970 season, Durst
purchased a McLaren M10B and raced it, not too successfully, in
early-season Continental (F5000) championship events. He went into
semi-retirement in 1971 to devote full time to his land development
business, returning in 1972 to compete in National championship racing,
he place third in the Northeast Division's A sports/racing point standings,
earning an invitation to the American Road Race of Champions where he
place second in the big-bore sports/racing event. Durst did not compete
in 1974.
