John Martin jumped into the national limelight last year when American
Motors picked him as one of their official Javelin drivers in the Trans-
American Championship. Actually, Martin has been driving successfully
in SCCA racing since 1964. In fact, Martin, listed as a mechanic on the
Javelin team’s payroll in 1968, took over one of the cars at the Mid-
Ohio Trans-Am and put it on the pole. He was also invited to the ARRC
runoffs in both 1967 and 1968. In 1968 he was loaned a Javelin team
car and led in the early stages but lost the ARRC title when brake
problems developed. Nevertheless, he still managed a second place
finish. In 1969, engine and other mechanical difficulties prevented him
from being a strong challenger for the Trans-Am title. Martin will
compete in the 1970 Continental Championship series with a Lotus
type 70 Formula A car.
