John Mahler started racing with a Triumph TR-3, went on to several
years in Alfa Romeos and was an early Formula Vee exponent, gaining
the Central Division class championship in 1964. His business career
as a successful contractor took him away from active racing for a few
seasons but in 1968 he ran a B production Shelby to a second and a
fifth in nationals. In 1969 Mahler made a big jump to SCCA’s class A,
formula car class with a new Lola-Chevrolet. An early outing at Green
Valley in Texas saw him notch the overall victory. He went on to run in
SCCA’s professional Continental Championship for FA cars. Suffering
mechanical difficulties throughout the season, Mahler’s best finish was
fifth place at Laguna Seca.
