John Gimbel started all the Trans-American Championship races last
year with fifth place at Watkins Glen at his best finish, and was ranked
13th in the year-end standings. Racing since 1969, Gimbel started six
Trans-Am sedan events in 1971 but was plagued by a variety of
problems and only finished one event. In 1970 he placed second in
class at the Daytona 24 Hours. Gimbel, a machinist, holds a B.A. in
History from the University of Pennsylvania.
