Although Jim Dunkel, a dentist in Rockford, did not begin competing in
road races until 1968, he was a regular entrant in rallies, gymkhanas
and slaloms and won the 1967 DX Sunray Trophy for his excellence in
these activities. He earned his SCCA National license his first year of
road racing after winning five consecutive Regional races in an Austin
Cooper S. In 1969, he finished second in the Central Division’s C
sedan point standings, sold the Cooper during the winter and
purchased a McKee Mk8 Formula 5000 car, campaigning it in a few
F/5000 pro races in 1970 and 1971. For ‘74, Dunkel will field a
Chevron B24 in the series. In SCCA club racing, Dunkel’s most
outstanding accomplishment was at the 1971 American Road Race of
Champions where he finished second in Formula A (5000).
